Since the start of the year, Palestinian militants have fired
hundreds of home-made rockets from the Gaza Strip into Israel,
killing two Israeli civilians.
The Israeli army has hit back hard, firing some 6,000 shells into Gaza.
Five Palestinian civilians have been killed in these attacks.
But neither side shows any sign of giving up.

イスラエルの一般市民二人が死亡しました。

Inside a makeshift kitchen with whitewashed walls,
a girl's bike with stabilisers and pink trim lies on the floor.
In the room next door, children's voices can be heard chattering.

白い漆喰の壁の間に合わせの台所には、安定装置の付いた少女用自転車と
ピンク色のトリムが床に横たわっています。
隣の部屋からは、子供達の話し声が聞こえてきます。


Overhead, the roof is made corrugated iron - protection from
both the fierce sunlight and from the Israeli drones
which would love to look down and see what I can see.

強い日差しと、私が見ることができるものをとても見下ろしたいであろう
イスラエルの無人機から守る為に、頭上の屋根は波型鉄板になっています。


What I can see are three masked men - Gaza's rocket makers.
They are members of the al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigades,part of the Fatah party
,and avowed rivals of the radical Hamas movement which currently runs
the Palestinian Authority.

私が見ることができるものは三人の覆面をかぶった男性−
ガザのロケット弾製造者達です。

The eyes of the chief rocket maker look young, but his words are strong.
"The Israelis kill our children," he says.
"So we want to kill their civilians."

'Cookery class'「料理教室」

On the white plastic garden table in front of him lies a metal tube with
fins, about a metre (three foot) long, maybe 15 centimetres in diameter.
There is also a pointed piece of metal shaped like an artillery warhead.
This is where the explosives are held.

白いプラスチック制のテーブルの上に、翼付きの金属製チューブ、
長さ約１メートル、多分直径は15センチメートルくらいが載っています。
大砲弾頭のように形づくられた金属の鋭い小片もあります。
これは爆発物が詰め込まれる部分です。


For about half an hour they mix what they say are household chemicals.
Using a coffee grinder, they remove the lumps from the powder.
They pour in a little water from a plastic soft drink bottle
then stir it. The whole thing looks like a cookery class.

混ぜ合わせる約半時間、彼らが話すのは家庭の化学物質です。

Then they heat it. As the naked flame of a gas burner sparks into life,
I step back.
"It's safe, don't worry," the rocket maker insists calmly.

One of the men, a big fellow with 1970s-style sunglasses, squeezes back

DIY rockets

The mixture, the rocket propellant, is then poured into the long tube.
While it sets, explosives are pushed into the warhead,
which is then screwed onto the rocket.

Finally, they bring out a can of black spray paint,
and add a lick of colour. This is do-it-yourself rocket making.

They make 10 of these a day.
They are crude, primitive, and designed to kill.

I ask them why they are doing this.

"To retaliate against Israeli aggression. To create a balance of fear.
They shell our houses, so we will shell theirs."

But these rockets are hardly a match for one of the world's most
sophisticated armies.

"We have to do something," comes the reply.

「我々は何かをしなければなりません」と返答が来ます。


Although crudely made, these rockets can be deadly. This year,
these makeshift projectiles have killed two Israelis, the army says.

粗野に作られているけれども、これらのロケットには殺傷力があります。
今年、これらの間に合わせのロケット弾は二人のイスラエル人を殺しました。

Although Hamas is not behind the rocket fire, Israel says
the radical group is doing nothing to stop the militants who are.

So the army has set out to do the job itself,
by shelling open areas from which the rockets are fired.

We went for a look. Within minutes,
the first artillery shell whistled over our heads.
Everyone ducked instinctively, as if that could help.
It landed a kilometre or so away, with a loud bang.
Within half an hour, I counted 30 shells exploding,
many of them close to civilian housing.

我々は見に行きました。
数分の内に、最初の砲弾は我々の頭の上を飛んで行きました。

Living dangerously：危険に生きます

Palestinian doctors say five civilians have been killed
by Israeli shells in the last few weeks.

パレスチナ人の医師の話では、この数週間で
イスラエル軍の攻撃によって、一般市民五人が死亡しました。


In the late afternoon,we joined Nasser Abu Khousa's children as they sto
od on the flat roof of their apartment block,pointing out the explosions

午後遅く、我々はナッサー・アブ Khousa の子供達に合流しました。

Five hit near the beach, close to the greenhouses.
Another five landed in the open fields.
The sand flies up, and a second or so later, the sound reaches you.

After dinner it started again.

An hour later, Nasser Abu Khousa and I were chatting on the street
when we felt the latest explosion.

その一時間後、一家の父親 ナッサー・アブ Khousa さんと私は
新たに砲弾の衝撃を感じました。


And the shells fell, on and off, into the night.
夜の間も散発的な砲撃が続きました。


Just after dawn, Abu Khousa sent 10-year-old Tamir to school.
"I'm worried about my son, and all the children,"
he told me. "They could be hit at any moment."

Intolerable situation：耐え難い状態

Leaving Gaza, we went to the hills overlooking this tiny strip of land,
to meet the Israeli army.

十日午後、私達はガザ地区を見下ろす丘の上でイスラエル軍を取材しました。
イスラエル軍はパレスチナからの攻撃に反撃しているだけだと言います。


Army spokesman Captain Jacob Dallal said Israel was responding to
Palestinian fire.

陸軍報道官大尉ジェイコブ Dallal は、イスラエルはパレスチナの攻撃に
反応しているだけだと言いました。


But was it acceptable for one of the world's most sophisticated armies
to be shelling areas where civilians live, putting lives at risk ?

世界最先端を誇る軍の一つが、一般市民が暮らしている地域を砲撃し、
一般市民の命を危険にさらすことは容認できると思いますか


"We can't have a situation where people living in this village here,
or that city over there, are under rocket fire," he said.
"And this is a border. The border has to be quiet."

ロケット弾の攻撃にさらされるようなことがあってはなりません。
ここは境界線なんです。この地帯の平穏を守る為に
パレスチナも責任を果たさなければなりません


For now, neither side is backing down.

今の所、双方とも引き下がろうとしません。


The rocket makers say they are fighting Israel's occupation of their
lands. Israel says it has no other option but to stop the rockets being
fired at its people.

ロケット弾を作っている男達はイスラエルによる占領と戦っていると主張し、
イスラエルはハマス率いるパレスチナ自治政府がロケット弾の攻撃を食い止め
られず、イスラエルの殲滅を訴え続けるなら、他に選択肢はないと主張します。


And as usual, it is the civilians on both sides who suffer.

苦しむのは双方の一般市民です。

どうして正しいと言えるのでしょうか＞

互に相手を非難する。
この紛争ではいつもの論理です。

イスラエル軍によると、今年に入って、ロケット弾で二人が死亡しました。
ロケット弾を使っているのはハマスではありません。
しかしイスラエルは、ハマスがロケット弾を発射する組織を
食い止める措置を一切採っていないと主張します。
その為イスラエル軍はこうして自ら対策をとります。
ロケット弾が発射された地点に反撃を加えるのです。
イスラエル軍は現在この地域を標的にしています。
私が数えた限りでは、この三十分間で約三十発の砲弾が撃ち込まれました。
砲弾は農民が仕事をしている畑のすぐ近くに着弾しています。
近くには一般市民の住宅もあります。
逃げ惑う住民達。
ここに来れば、どうして誤って市民が
巻き込まれるようなことが起こるのか納得できます。

BBC の MATTHEW PRICE 記者は、

今の所、この悪循環を断ち切る方法はないようにみえます。

Relatives mourn an eight-year-old Gazan girl killed this week.
親類が今週殺された８歳のガザの少女は嘆き悲しみます。

On a ridge just outside the Gaza Strip the dark green camouflaged
weapons of the Israeli army are firing round after round.
Loud booms echo across the dusty fields.
ガザ地区のすぐ外の丘の上にイスラエル軍の黒い緑にカモフラージュされた
兵器はラウンドからラウンドへと次々発砲しています。
爆音がほこりまみれのフィールドの向こう側に反響します。

A few miles away, inside the Gaza Strip,
there are tractors ploughing the fields.

Then an Israeli artillery shell whistles overhead.

There is a loud explosion as the shell hits the ground.
A cloud of dust is thrown up.

The shell lands just a few metres away from a farmer.
He emerges from the dust, and gets back to his work.

Israel is targeting the open areas used by Palestinian militants,
but even one of the world's most modern armies makes mistakes.

I was in Beit Lahiya a few days ago just after the latest accident.

As long as calm does not prevail on the Israeli side, neither will it do
so on the Palestinian side. Our operations are going to intensify

Israel said Palestinian militants had fired a rocket
from the area two hours earlier. Its artillery had struck back.
One boy wept as he told me the rocket
had injured members of his extended family.
"About 10 were injured", he said.
Has anyone died, I asked.
"A girl, about eight years old."
The round killed eight-year-old Hadil Ghaben
-and injured her brothers and sisters.
The next day they sat at her funeral,her three-year-old sister confused,
sombre, her face bandaged and scarred.
According to Palestinian medical sources, 40 Palestinians have been
injured in the last week and 90 children have been treated for shock.
Hadil was the second civilian killed in seven days
from the artillery bombardment.
Children hear the alarm when the rockets are fired
and they have 20 seconds to find a place to hide

Penina Ragolsky：Israeli living near Gaza
Israel's shelling is becoming common place.
On average, 150 artillery rounds a day are being fired into Gaza.
Day and night, the sound booms across the city and the surrounding areas
.It echoes along the streets. Sometimes it shakes the buildings.
In one half-hour period, I counted at least 25 explosions.
"One of them went straight into our house,and from the explosion she was
killed," says Penina Ragolsky, of her son's girlfriend. "A lovely girl."
「一発が家の中に直接入りました。爆発で彼女は殺されました」と、
彼女の息子のガールフレンドのペニナ Ragolsky が言います。

Israel has recently been firing 150 shells into Gaza every day
Mrs Ragolsky lives across the front line,
in a small Israeli village close to Gaza.
Penina Ragolsky said the rockets come most days at the moment.
"When I am out I hear the alarm and I look in the sky
and I say 'where will it fall now?'"
That is what Gaza's Palestinian are also wondering.
There are many who tell you they wish the militants would stop firing at
Israel, since Israel always hits back harder, and it is the civilians
who suffer.
Israel hoped when it withdrew from the crowded Gaza Strip last summer,
that its problems there would end.
But, for now at least, neither side is talking about backing down.
